Episode 2 of 3: How Leaders Show Well Led Day to Day
Summary
A policy says what should happen. Well led is about what actually happens. This video looks at how leaders make sure the first becomes the second.
From policy to practice
Episode 1 set out what CQC means by well led. Episode 2 looks at what it looks like day to day. James says leaders show well led by making sure the policy happens, and that in practice this often comes down to three things.
Three things leaders do
Be visible. Know what daily care really looks like. A leader who sees the service first hand is better placed to tell whether the policy is being followed.
Listen and act. When staff or people using the service raise something, it leads to a change. Listening matters, and people also need to see that raising a concern leads somewhere.
Check and follow up. Audits that lead to action, not just a tick. An audit only helps if what it finds is acted on and checked again.
These three are James's own plain English groupings and a practitioner's view. They are not CQC wording, a CQC checklist or a CQC requirement.
Being able to show it
It also helps to be able to show it. Evidence that something happens is a stronger answer than a policy that says it should. A simple trail does the job: the action taken, the change made, and the check that it worked.
The question for every service
James leaves viewers with one question: if someone asked how you know your policies are working, what would you show them?
A practical way to start is to pick one policy and ask what you could show that proves it happens in practice.

Episode 3 looks at what weak oversight can look like, and how teams recover.
